Imaizumi Kannon-do, which is said to have been built in 1669, was built to pray for the repose of the souls of the victims of the tsunami that occurred in 1340. It is said to be the predecessor of Kawakura Jizo, who is famous for itako’s approach. Nearby is Imaizumi Sai-no-Kawara, said to be the birthplace of Japan’s oldest itako, and the annual festival held on June 23 and 24 is crowded with itako and pilgrims.
